What is Black Box in Airplane | Why does it used in Airplane ?

Air travel is considered as one of the safest travels if we compare with other transportation. But, if any airplane crashes then a term comes into picture i.e BLACK BOX. In this article, we are discussing about Black Box and its uses in airplane. So, read this till its end to understand each term related with the safety of Airplane and Black Box.

WHAT IS BLACK BOX ?

Black Box is an instrument used to record all the activities of any Airplane during its flight. If any airplane crashes then to know its fault or the reason of crash these instrument are used. Black box is generally kept at the back side of the airplane for security point of view. It is made of Titanium metal and is enclosed in a Titanium box which gives it strength to withstand any shock if it falls in sea or falls from the height. It is very important and the only source to know to about the reason of accident.

HISTORY

Near 1950, when first commercial jet crashed five times in its service of two years, then some engineers team thought that there must a instrument or machine which can record all the activities of any Airplane during its flight. An instrument was made to store the data of flight using metal foil and other material.
First Generation Black Box - Initially, Metal foil was used to store the data of flight in order to understand the problem occurred before accident. In 1970, metal foil was replaced by Magnetic tape which was far better than metal foil in term of its performance and speed. Then from 1990 onwards, we are using Solid State Drive in Black Box to record all the activities of flight. Due to fast processing speed of SSD, it is more reliable than other storing devices.  

BLACK BOX HAS TWO BOXES

COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER


It is used to record the voice of last two hours within four channels. Pilot and Copilot are two whose voice are recorded by cockpit voice recorder. Third recorder is set inside cockpit and fourth is placed near passengers. These four recorders are investigated in order to listen what happened just before the accident.

FLIGHT DATA RECORDER


This recorder can record last 25 hrs of data of flight and it consists of at least 88 different types of data. Flight data recorder gives the output in 3D animation through which we can understand the mistake done by pilot which results in accident.This box can contain information about direction, altitude, fuel, speed, turbulence, cabin temperature etc and it can withstand a temperature of about 11000°C for one hour and a temperature of 260°C for 10 hours. Flight data recorder are red or pink in color so that can be found easily.

MORE ABOUT BLACK BOX

Black Box is made up of a strong metal and it can work for 30 days without any electricity. It can withstand a temperature of 11000°C. It consist of a device in it which continuously emit ultrasonic waves. So, when this box is lost anywhere, it keeps on emitting the waves along with a beep sound for about 30 days. This voice can be identified by the investigators from a distance of about 2-3 Kilometers. An interesting fact with regard to Black box is that it can emit waves from the depth of 14000 feet in the sea.
